5/3/2012 - LACLKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- -- Cyber Warriors, we are fast approaching the summer months. Children will be out of school and a majority of personnel will enjoy leave during this time. Family vacations, outdoor recreational activities, and plenty of yard work will reign supreme.
Historically, the Air Force has focused safety campaigns aimed at reducing mishaps during the 101 Critical Days of Summer, which starts Memorial Day weekend and ends on Labor Day. This campaign has been highly successful in the past where one of the primary goals is for good communication to yield good decision making. Our campaign will serve as a catalyst in ensuring we stay focused on safety, on and off the job.
In fiscal year 2011, the Air Force lost 18 active duty members during the 101 Critical Days of Summer, the lowest number of summer fatalities since the inception of the campaign; however, it was 18 too many. Last year, Air Force Space Command had fewer summertime mishaps than in the previous seven years - a milestone in Air Force Space Command history. Headquarters 24th Air Force played an important role in this milestone as we had only one recordable mishap last summer (three total over the past three summers).
This didn't happen by accident. It's a testament to the strong safety mentality engrained in our personnel. Based on these results, we believe the 101 Critical Days of Summer campaign is an effective tool for preserving manpower/resources and deserves continued leadership support. Due to the low risk nature of the cyber mission, we must remain vigilant by keeping safety at the forefront, on and off duty. Three ways we can do this is to maintain situational awareness, follow established procedures and guidelines, and make good risk management decisions.
I challenge all members of the 24th Air Force team to build on the past three year's outstanding achievements. You've proven that our wingmen are focused and do not accept bad decision-making at any level. Further, our safety focus must remain consistent--resolute and strong in culture--so all Airmen understand that we expect nothing less than responsible Airmen making good choices not only during the critical days of summer, but for the entire year. |
