7/1/2010 - RAF LEEMING, North Yorkshire, UK -- (Editor's note: This article is the final article in a series of three articles about the United Architecture 2010 exercise.)

For the past two weeks US Airmen from the 689th Combat Comm Wing, Robins AFB, Ga. and Royal Air Force Airmen with the 90 Signals Unit joined forces at RAF Leeming, England participating in United Architecture 2010 from June 21 to July 2. This Anglo-American communications tech melting pot proved to be an outstanding mix

"A lot of effort to plan and establish a clear goal started the exercise off on the right foot and they didn't look back," said 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Dill, UA2010 USAF team leader. "We had to coordinate the logistics of getting all of our people and equipment over here, though it was pretty easy as I had Flight Lieutenant Paul Jennings, a Royal Air Force officer assigned to our unit assisting me."

"We are here to try and connect the new American Voice of IP (Internet Protocol) equipment to the British secure phone system," said Lieutenant Dill. "We are also creating a manual so that if we deploy to the theater of operations with them (the British) we can easily setup a comm system where the two systems can talk to each other. Now the solution will need to be reviewed and accredited. "

Although multiple road blocks (to include two different communications standards) had to be overcome, the 8 Airmen from the 5th Combat Communications Group and the 7 Royal Air Force Airmen from the 90 Signals Unit persevered and used their strengths and skill sets.
"The Americans tend to be a little more specialized and very good at that specialization," said Flight Sergeant Marty Leathan, 90 Signals Unit, Rapid Application and Integration Development Team and UA Project Officer. "We are a smaller force and we cross-train more, we try to spread the skills out."
"You have great guys on the IP and we have got some really good guys on the voice network -between that sharing of the knowledge, the solution came quickly," said Flight Sergeant Leathan.
"I think the best thing to get out of it (UNITED ARCHITECTURE 2010) is the fact that we are a few thousand miles apart, but we are very much the same kind of people, we have the same worries technically and professionally as we do personally ... if you can't have human interoperability than you no chance at anything else! We worked together and solved the problem," Flight Sergeant Leathan added.
"Being primarily a data technician, I got a chance to see a huge Voice side of life. We used a totally new standard of passing information. It is exciting and I am truly honored to be part of this event," said Airman 1st Class Warren Momon, UA2010 Router and Switches Technician.
The Airmen from both units, services and countries came together with one goal and have succeeded; UNITED ARCHITECTURE 2010 was truly a success and all gained knowledge on how these two systems work together.
