5TH COMBAT COMMUNICATIONS GROUP

The 5th Combat Communications Group has been based at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., since its activation on 1 July, 1964. Originally called the 5th "Mobile" Communications Group it is still affectionately referred to as the 5th Mob. Today, the unit has over 700 combat-ready Airmen and can be a self-supporting combat unit. The group's Airmen operate complex networks, switches, and base-level communications equipment delivering critical voice and high speed data communications to operational users while providing its own site security, electrical power, and vehicle maintenance. The 5 CCG mission varies from providing small fly-away communications packages to rapidly deploying entire theater air base communications packages and deployable Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems.
The 5 CCG is an Air Force Space Command unit reporting to 24th Air Force at Lackland AFB, TX. The group's four combat communications mission squadrons and one support squadron deploy in support of joint task force, combatant command, and Air Force flying wing operations and exercises. The 5 CCG also serves in an advisory capacity for three Air National Guard combat communications groups and Air Force Reserve communications flights with more than 2,500 people in subordinate squadrons from Maine to the Virgin Islands.
The 5 CCG supports United States Central Command Air Forces and Joint Chiefs of Staff operations with exercises in Southwest Asia, Central and South America and the Pacific theater. The group also responds to contingencies, emergencies and natural disasters both overseas and throughout the United States; including the deployment of hundreds of 5 CCG Airmen to the Gulf Coast Region in support of Hurricane Katrina relief operations, Pakistan in support of earthquake relief operations and in the local community for flood relief. The Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce selected the 5th as winner of the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Community Service Awards.
The 5 CCG earned the prestigious Major General Harold M. McClelland Award as the Best Large Communications Unit in the Air Force for 1973, 2003, 2006 and 2008. The 447 Expeditionary Communications Squadron, a deployed unit in Baghdad, Iraq manned by the 5th Mob, was the Best Small Communications Unit in the Air Force for 2008. Additionally, the 5 CCG was named the Best Large Communications Unit in Air Combat Command for 1993, 1997, 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The 5th Mob earned its twelfth Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in 2007 and its first Air Force Meritorious Unit Award in 2009.
