The 688th Cyberspace Wing (688th CW) is located at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, Texas. The wing delivers proven information operations and engineering infrastructure capabilities integrated across air, space, and cyberspace. This wing boasts two groups, the 38th Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group and the 318th Cyberspace Operations Group, creating a multi-disciplined organization.

Currently the 688th CW encompasses 1,388 military and civilian members, assigned to seven locations worldwide and deployed to an additional 14 global locations, to perform the 688th CW mission. In addition, more than 1,900 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve personnel directly support the 688th CW mission.
The wing is composed of two groups, each responsible for a distinct part and success of the 688th CW mission.
The 318th Cyberspace Operations Group (318th COG) explores new cyberspace technologies to engineer next-generation weapons capabilities for operational warfighters. It has a formal test squadron for operational test and evaluation; a tactics squadron to optimize information operation (IO) tactics, techniques and procedures for weapon systems; a formal training unit (FTU) to arm the next generation of cyber warriors with the most up-to-date information; and a cyber operational squadron to defend critical Air Force missions.

The 38th Cyberspace Engineering Installation Group (38th CEIG) is the Air Force's premier engineering and installation group - the backbone of the cyberspace domain. The engineering squadron provides cyberspace systems integrators to every numbered air force, major command, and Air Force base worldwide and special mission teams for operational engineering problems. The group also has the only active duty engineering and installation (E&I) squadron which includes a specialized engineering flight for unique communications services; a specialized cyber contracting squadron, Air Force workplan and communication services authorizations (local base dial tone); a cyberspace readiness squadron for long-haul communication, Scope Edge teams and enterprise maintenance of Air Force communication systems; and an operations support squadron to provide personnel, financial and facility maintenance of the Tinker compound.

Aug. 18, 2009 - Air Force Information Operation Center (AFIOC) was realigned under Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), assigned to the new 24th Air Force, and redesignated as the 688th Information Operations Wing (688th IOW), Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. As part of this realignment the 38th CEG (later redesignated the 38th CEIG) was reassigned to the 688th IOW, and the 90th Information Operations Squadron (90th IOS) was activated and assigned to the 318th IOG.
Aug. 20, 2009 - The 85th Engineering Installation Squadron (85th EIS) was realigned under the 38th CEG.
May 14, 2010 - Air Force Space Command presented the 39th IOS with the 2009 Best Information Operations Squadron Award for outstanding instruction in information operations and cyber warfare.
May 17, 2010 - Air Force Space Command named the 688th Information Operations Wing as the Outstanding Wing with a Cyberspace Mission for 2009.
Aug. 18, 2010 - The 688th IOW celebrated its one-year anniversary as a wing.
Sept. 13-27, 2010 - Less than a year removed from its redesignation and reorganization, the 688th IOW underwent a successful compliance inspection, receiving an overall grade of "in compliance with comments." There were no critical findings and no "not in compliance" areas identified.
Dec. 1, 2010 - The 688th IOW earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for the period of Aug. 18, 2009 to Oct. 1, 2010.
July 19, 2011 - The 688th IOW underwent its first change of command as Col. Paul W. Welch assumed leadership from Col. Robert J. Skinner in a ceremony presided over by Maj. Gen. Suzanne M. Vautrinot, 24th Air Force commander.
Dec. 7, 2011 - The 23rd IOS was inactivated. The 318th Operations Support Squadron was concurrently activated on the same date.
Jan. 6, 2012 - The 38th CEG was redesignated as the 38th CEIG. Additionally, the 38th Engineering Squadron, 38th Operations Support Squadron, and 38th Contracting Squadron were activated under the 38th CEIG on the same date.
April 27, 2012 - The 38th CYRS was activated under the 38 CEIG.
July 23, 2013 - Col. Michael C. Harasimowicz assumed command of the 688th IOW from Col. Paul W. Welch during a ceremony presided over by Maj. Gen. J. Kevin McLaughlin, 24th Air Force commander.
Sept. 13, 2013 - The 688th IOW was redesignated as the 688th CW. Additionally, the 318th IOG was redesignated as the 318th COG.
