The 836 COS is a subodinate unit under the 688th Cyberspace Wing, 24th Air Force, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.


The 836th Cyberspace Operations Squadron (836 COS), located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, provides premier Defensive Cyberspace Operations (DCO) maneuver/mission assurance capabilities to its mission partners.  The 836 COS has administrative control over and responsible for organizing, training and equipping three Cyberspace Protection Teams (CPTs).  Each CPT is postured to conduct tailored DCO missions via a three-phase Survey, Secure and Protect employment methodology.

Mission:
To present, plan, and execute cyberspace operations in order to defend National informational networks against cyber threats.

Vision:
Provide the DoD’s most aggressive cyber mission force, protecting National Cyber key terrain. 

People:
The 836 COS is comprised of approximately 120 military, civilian and contractor positions.

Organization:

The 836 COS falls under the 688th Cyberspace Operations Group, 688th Cyberspace Wing, 24th Air Force and Air Force Space Command.  The 836 COS is one of five defensive cyberspace operations squadrons under the 688 COG.  The 836 COS presents forces to the Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) which is responsible for defending National informational networks against cyber threats.

Cyberspace Capabilities:

The 836 COS presents forces to the United States Cyber Command as part of the Cyber Mission Forces construct. Forces are presented as Cyberspace Protection Teams each comprised of five Squads with specialized capabilities:  Mission Protection, Cyberspace Readiness, Cyber Support, Discover and Counter-Infiltration and Cyber Threat Emulation. 

History:
Designated as 185th Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron on 14 May 1948. Organized on 1 June 1948. Redesignated as: 1903d Airways and Air Communications Service Squadron on 1 October 1948; 1903d Communications Squadron on 1 July 1961; 1903d Information Systems Squadron on 1 July 1984; 1903d Communications Squadron on 1 November 1986; 836th Communications Squadron on 30 April 1991.  Inactivated on 1 May 1992.  Redesignated as 836th Cyberspace Operations Squadron on 17 November 2015.  Activated on 3 December 2015. 51st Airways and Air Communications Service Group (later, 1801st Airways and Air Communications Service Group; Western Airways and Air Communications Service Region; Western Communications Region), 1 June 1948; Southern Communications Area, 1 May 1970; Tactical Communications Area (later, Tactical Communications Division; Tactical Information Systems Division; Tactical Communications Division), 30 September 1976; 836th Air Division, 1 October 1990-1 May 1992. 688th Cyberspace Operations Group, 3 December 2015.
